South Indian playback singer Swarnalatha passed away due to lung infection in Chennai.The 37-year-old, hailing from Palakkad, was admitted to a private hospital in the city on Sunday morning after she had difficulty in breathing. According to her family members, the singer had been undergoing treatment for lung infection for over a year and did not record for films during the period.
She has been singing since 1989 with many music directors. She has rendered songs in Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, Urdu, Badaga.
The national-award-winning singer, who has sung nearly 6,000 songs in seven Indian languages, made her debut in ‘Neethikku Thandanai’ with the song ‘Chinnachiru Kiliye Kannamma,’ set to music by composer M.S.Viswanathan.
Swarnalatha has worked with famous film composers in the film industry like ilayaraaja and A.R Rahman.
Swarnalatha also got the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for famous song Porale Ponnuthayi from the film Karuththamma in 1995. She has sung hit songs from films including Thalapathi (1991), Thevar Magan (1992), Karuththamma (1994), Bombay (1995), Indian (1996), and Minsaara Kanavu (1997).
