Today, September 15, 2010 Engineers Day in India.. Engineer’s Day 2010 which becomes 150 years. Wishing everyone a very Happy Engineers Day.Very few people must be knowing that every year, the Engineer’s Day is celebrated on Sept 15. Engineers Day is celebrated in honour of the birth of Mokshagundam Visvesvarayya, a great Indian engineer and statesman

Mokshagundam Visvesvarayya’s father Srinivas Sastry was an Ayurvedi practitioner as well a Sanskirt scholar. When Mokshagundam was 15 years of age, his father passed away. He completed his schooling from Bangalore and went to Madras University in 1881 for B.A.

He served as the Diwan or First Minister of the princely state of Mysore. He also later made Knight Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire by the British for his myriad contributions to the public good.

Sir M Vishweshwaraiah is known for his automatic flood protection system which was installed in Khadakvasla reservoir near Pune, Tigra dam in Gwalior and Krishnaraja Sagara (KRS) dam in Mandya as well.

In 1955, he was honored with the Bharat Ratan for his great contributions in the engineering field and for the welfare of the people of India.

57th National Film Awards – 2010

Tinsel town sultans Aamir Khan and Amitabh Bachchan are the recipients of the 57th National Film Awards along with Bengal’s critically acclaimed filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh, according to the latest announcements.The awards were announced by head of the awards jury Ramesh Sippy this evening.

Bachchan won the award for his role of a child suffering with a rare disorder – progeria – in the film ‘Paa’. The actor has won two awards ‘Agneepath’ and ‘Hum’ for Paa also fetched veteran actress Arundhati Nag the award for Best Supporting Actress. Ananya Chaterjee won the Best Actress award for ‘Aabo Hawa’. Rituparno Ghosh has been adjudged Best Director.

The super successful Hindi film ‘3 Idiots’ bagged three awards – Best Popular Film, Best Director and Best Producer. Malayalam film ‘Kutty Shrank’ won the Best Film award. Shyam Benegal’s ‘Well Done Abba‘ bagged the Best Film on Social Issues while Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s ”Dilli-6′ won the award for Best Film on National Integration.

Farooq Sheikh bagged the Best Supporting Actor award for the film ‘Lahore’.

Playback singer Swarnalatha passes away

South Indian playback singer Swarnalatha passed away due to lung infection in Chennai.The 37-year-old, hailing from Palakkad, was admitted to a private hospital in the city on Sunday morning after she had difficulty in breathing. According to her family members, the singer had been undergoing treatment for lung infection for over a year and did not record for films during the period.

She has been singing since 1989 with many music directors. She has rendered songs in Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, Urdu, Badaga.

The national-award-winning singer, who has sung nearly 6,000 songs in seven Indian languages, made her debut in ‘Neethikku Thandanai’ with the song ‘Chinnachiru Kiliye Kannamma,’ set to music by composer M.S.Viswanathan.

Swarnalatha has worked with famous film composers in the film industry like ilayaraaja and A.R Rahman.

Swarnalatha also got the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for famous song Porale Ponnuthayi from the film Karuththamma in 1995. She has sung hit songs from films including Thalapathi (1991), Thevar Magan (1992) Karuththamma (1994), Bombay (1995), Indian (1996), and Minsaara Kanavu (1997).

Chennai to get a new identity on September 15 -Anna Centenary Library

It’s very heartening to the book readers in the City that large library complex are coming up in Kotturpuram as a part of Anna Centenary Celebrations. The library is named after the former Chief Minister C N Annadurai as Anna Library Complex estimates Rs.172 crore, eight-storeyed building, modelled on the famous National Library in Singapore,

Mark & Meclin Solutions Pvt. Ltd is proudly partnering with Directorate of Public Libraries to provide IT consultancy services for the Digital Automation, Book Management, Security, Integration and Complete Networking of Anna Centenary Library.

The eight-storied complex will house about 12 lakh books, e-journals and e-books on a wide variety of subjects.

The public library, which is expected to start soon, will have four lakh books, one lakh e-journals and 50,000 to one lakh e-books in the first year and the number of books would be increased steadily in the next three years. While the children’s section would have about 40,000 titles, besides journals and short films, the Braille section on the ground floor would have a minimum of 25,000 titles and also talking books.

A separate floor had been planned for Tamil language, for which a hunt had been launched to collect rare manuscripts. The library complex, coming up on eight acres of land, will have a capacity of 1,250 people. It will also house a separate auditorium with a capacity to seat 1,280 people and an amphitheatre on the terrace.
