James Cameron’s Oscar-winning and box office behemoth, Titanic, will be getting a 3D re-release in the Spring of 2012.
We’ve heard rumblings for a long time that Titanic would eventually get a 3D release and more recently Cameron said the aim was to release it in spring of 2012 to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the titular ship’s sinking. Now Los Angeles Times – in a piece celebrating Titanic actress Gloria Stuart’s 100th birthday – has confirmed the aim by saying that Cameron is, “converting the blockbuster into 3-D for re-release in April 2012, the 100th anniversary of the ship’s sinking.”
Now that we know that Titanic will be coming at us in more than two dimensions, it begs the question does it really need to be converted? Aren’t we overrun already with new 3D movies without delving more than a decade into the past and converting a film for re-release? That’s the way I look at it.
However, with Titanic being the second highest-grossing movie of all time (behind Cameron’s own Avatar – he really is the king of the world! ), I’m sure Cameron is confident it can add a lot more to its $1.8 billion gross, especially with the extra cost of 3D ticket prices.
The thing that bothers me most is not the fact that Titanic is getting a 3D re-release but that it’s being converted into 3D. Now I know that’s an inevitability – unless Cameron can utilize some of the Terminator time travel technology – but this will likely mean the crappy kind of 3D that comes from adding the extra dimension after-the-fact. Those of you unlucky enough to catch Clash of the Titans, for example, will know just how bad post-production 3D conversion can be. Yes it’s Cameron, the Avatar pioneer himself doing the converting, but still…
We’ve now gotten to the point where it’s not just new movies that are in danger thanks to the 3D craze – old movies can’t even hide under the cover of the past. Watch out Wizard of Oz…
What are your thoughts on Titanic getting a 3D re-release? Up for sinking once more, this time in 3D or is this taking things too far? Sound off in the comments below.
Look forTitanic 3D in theaters sometime in April, 2012.

myEshala is a learning tool that brings the best aspects of school to your home. It’s actually a virtual school for your kids where they learn, practice and revise academics and you are updated on all their activities – and all this in the comfort of your home.
Pune-based Pragatipath Educational Foundation recently launched myEshala. It is a learning tool that enables children to study the Maharashtra State (S.S.C.) curriculum from their home. Pragatipath Educational Foundation also runs the Millennium National School in Pune. The model of e-learning was tried and tested on the school’s students first, before bringing it out as an open tool. The tool can be used independently and as a reinforcement to what has already been taught at school.
The tool, a demo copy of which can be downloaded from the website, www.myEshala.in, comprises of lesson-by-lesson lecture videos of all subjects as per the State (S.S.C.) curriculum, including Maths, Science, History, Geography, and English and Grammar. The lectures are designed and scripted by a young team of professionals. The website claims that each lecture has been tried, evaluated and reviewed by school teachers and students, making it effective, accurate and interesting. After small segments, preliminary testing is done to check learning levels.
A copy of myEshala is valid for a period of one academic year, between May 1 to April 30 every year. In this time period, one is free to use all the available lectures and attempt all the quizzes as many times as wanted. It is available at an annual fee of Rs. 3,500 for home use.
Available only for the English medium syllabus from Class 3 to Class 8 as of now, the Foundation aims to expand it to other classes and to Marathi medium within a few months. As mobile phone penetration in rural areas is better than that of computers, the tool will be made compatible for mobile phones within the next year, to reach out to rural students. The Foundation has also requested the Pune Municipal Corporation to integrate the tool in Corporation-run schools.

Hyundai’s Santa Fe will be an SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) priced around Rs. 24 Lakh and is expected to be launched in October, which is about the same time as the festive season in India.
The powerful SUV doubles as a family car with a seven seats. More or less, it is a revamped model of the previous Terracon and other SUV models of Hyundai. It will be generally powered by a 2.2 Liter diesel engine, which works well with Indian conditions.
The Korean company plans to import these cars initially into India, as ready to go units, and looking at the response will start the manufacture in India too.
