Conglomerate ITC Ltd on Tuesday said it expects to have up to 60 new hotel properties operational in the next 3-4 years as it expands to tap the growing potential of the Indian hospitality sector.

The company, which currently has about 40 hotels at various stages of construction, said it will start work on another 15-20 new in the next one year.

“So in the next 3-4 years ITC will have up to 60 new properties operational,” ITC Ltd Chief Executive Hotels Division Nakul Anand told PTI on the sidelines of Hoteliers’ Conclave here.

Asked about investments on the new projects, he said: “It is difficult to quantify as it will vary from property to property.”

Anand also declined to specify the total number of rooms that could be added with the new properties saying: “Room capacity will vary from 40-60 to up to 600 depending on the type of property.”

ITC Chairman Y C Deveshwar at the firm’s AGM in July had stated that the Indian hospitality sector offered investment opportunity of up to Rs 9,000 crore in next 7-10 years.

“At conservative estimates, India needs 50,000 rooms in the next two-three years. This sector, too, carries an investment opportunity of up to 9,000 crore innext 7-10 years to fuel growth,” Deveshwar had said.

Of this, ITC would prefer to invest in high-end, seven- star super luxury hotels, although it was not averse to investing in the Fortune chain of hotels, he had said.

ITC operates its hospitality business under the ITC- Welcomgroup, which has properties under the brands — ITC Hotels Luxury Collection, WelcomHotels, Fortune Hotels (budget hotels), and WelcomHeritage (chain of palaces, forts, havelis and resorts).

It has over 100 hotels at over 80 locations in India.

Malayalis celebrate Onam In 2010

A huge flower carpet, Snehapookkalam, has been created using tones of flowers with an aim of getting into the Guinness book of records at Swopnanagari in Kozhikode on the eve of Onam celebrations
Cultural programmes by renowned artistes, adventure sports competitions and colourful processions will mark this year’s Onam celebrations beginning on Monday.
An array of art forms, traditional and popular, will be presented from August 23 to 26.
Keralites today celebrated Onam, their spring festival commemorating the egalitarian Utopia under the reign of mythical King Mahabali when people lived in plenty, prosperity and equality.

Cutting across caste, class and religious barriers homes were decorated with floral carpets to welcome the annual re-visit of Mahabali.

The legend has it that the “Asura’ king Mahabali was banished to the netherworld by Lord Vishnu, who took the incarnation of Vamana the dwarf, under pressure from ‘Devas’, who were jealous of the King’s popularity.

Before going down, the King secured an assurance from Vishnu that he would be allowed to visit his subjects on the Thiruvonam day of the month of Malayalam calendar every year.

Regardless of the soaring prices, the festivities scaled to its crescendo in the last couple of days with towns and villages thronged by men, women and children doing their festival shopping.

A consumer state, most items to celebrate Onam including the flowers were brought from the neighbouring states as Kerala’s domestic production is too little to meet the festival demand.

Bringing relief of the common man, the state agencies organised hundreds of special fares across the state where essentials and vegetables at subsidised rates.

Cultural events, showcasing the best of Kerala’s performing arts were organised in the state capital as well as other cities and towns across the state for a week.

The state officially honoured thespian Kamal Hasan , who was the chief guest at the Onam-Tourism Week celebrations here last night. The actor launched a massive eye-donation campaign in the state.

In rural areas, local youth clubs organised art and sports competitions, as part of revival of folk arts and rural sporting traditions, many of which are on the verge of extinction.

A sumptuous feast, ‘Onasadya’ was another highlight of the day as at most homes the members assembled for their lunch after invoking the blessings of King Mahabali.

Kerala governor RS Gavai, chief minister VS Achtuthanandan and leaders of all political parties greeted Malayalis at home as well as abroad.
