After much worry and criticism before the start, the nineteenth Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India have reached a successful conclusion without any of the disastrous events that had been predicted. Of the 71 participating countries, Australia topped the medal chart, taking home 177 medals, 74 of them gold. Host nation India also fared well, coming in second overall with 101 medals. The games were held from October 3rd through the 14th, ending with a closing ceremony in New Delhi.

India’s day of destiny finally arrived with the Games due to begin in fortress-like New Delhi, after a shambolic run-up that threatened to derail the event.

The stadium reverberated with Rahman’s Games theme song ‘Yaaro, India Bula Liya’ and his famous ‘Jai Ho’ number from his Oscar-winning ‘ Slumdog Millionaire’ album, in the midst of a spectacular fireworks display, before the curtains came down on the spectacular ceremony.

For the first time in Games history the athletes who took part in the march past were later seated on the periphery to watch the remaining part of the pageant.

A tight security blanket was thrown around the capital with snipers too placed on building terraces situated on the periphery of the stadium’s approach roads ahead of the commencement.

The 19th edition of the Games will see more than 6,800 athletes and officials, the biggest-ever assembly in the history of the multi-discipline event which began in 1930, taking part in 17 disciplines ranging from athletics to netball and lawn bowls.

Competitions in 17 disciplines would commence in earnest tomorrow with the opening day seeing eight gold medals being decided.

A.R. Rahman announced the release of CWG theme song “Swagatham” in New Delhi. The song is currently not completed yet as Rahman is doing final touches to the most awaiting song of India. According to Rahman, his song will beat and go beyond the Shakira’s Waka-Waka Song, which she sang for Fifa World Cup 2010.Since the song is not energetic, I don’t think it can beat Waka-Waka for some people. The song is dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi.
